A bit of history
It’s May 2021, when I started this site over 17 ish years ago , there was no social media, no smartphones, and no influencers. Garfey.com (GDC) was a micro social network for me and my friends, I’d post photos of nights out or events, and come up with witty comments. I made some t-shirts with stupid phrases on them that we liked, some people bought them, mostly me. I even tried my hand at car based scavenger hunts, the Garfball rally (yep, I have no shame).
Things changed, as they do, the world moved on. We didn’t need a site to post photos on, because Facebook would let us do that. Everyone has a better quality camera built into the phone in their hand, than I did in a dedicated digital camera (ask me about my 1 megapixel Sony Cybershot that only took Sony memorysticks sometime).
Things changed again, me and most of my friends settled down and had kids which meant less (exciting? interesting?) things to post about. Certainly they were less frequent.
What now? Why now?
The answer to both of those is the same, I’m not sure. The site needed an update as it was on a dodgy old wordpress theme, and the last post was 3 years old. I’ve had the domain all this time and refuse to give it up, so I thought I might as well do something with it.
How not to website in 2021
When you create a website, you need to be clear about your message. You need to find your niche, or maybe even double-niche!! Don’t forget to be consistent with your content. That’s how your build a following, or a readership (who am I kidding, people don’t read!).
What you don’t do is. Create a website for no real reason other than you wanted to, or post about whatever random things you’re into that week / month / season. But Fuck It, that’s what I’m going to do.
